  Final Steps

Try using another TV on your floor that is working in another room, and set it up with your port:

If the other TV is tuning to RU-tv channels successfully, then there is a problem with your TV that you must resolve.

If the other TV is not working, then something is wrong with the port. Submit an online ticket to request a repair.

  4. I’m not receiving all of the channels.

Scan for the channels again. If you see some of the channels, the feed is working.

  5. I have poor reception.

If you have a fuzzy or distorted screen, check the cable connection. If this doesn’t work, try your TV in another student’s room. If your TV still doesn’t work, the problem is with the TV set. If this TV does work in the other room, try these steps:

Take the TV cable from their room and try it in your room. If the TV works with the new cable, you need to replace your cable.

  6. Sometimes the broadcast on an HD channel looks more like a standard definition channel. Why is this?

Sometimes networks may show classic or older content that was originally recorded only in standard definition, which means even though you’re watching an HD signal the original content will display as standard definition.

  7. Will TiVo work at Rutgers?

  No

  8. Where should I report problems with my TV service?

After making sure you’ve followed all of the steps to set up and troubleshoot your connection, you can submit an online ticket.

  9. What should I do if everything works?

  Enjoy!

*Note: Analog television can no longer work with our network.

RU-tv broadcasts most of its channels using the QAM 256 standard. There are several ways to connect a digital television to our system. The type of equipment you have will determine your setup.

  Things You Need

Digital TV and owner’s manual (HINT: If you do not have the owner’s manual for your television, try searching on the manufacturer’s website.)

  Original remote control unit

Coaxial cable with “F” connectors at each end (This is a common type of cable you may already have; if you do not have one, you can find a cable hookup kit at a university bookstore or home electronics retailer.)

Depending on the type of television, two short lengths of coax and a “splitter” may be required. Consult owner’s manual.

  What To Do

Plug your TV into an electrical outlet.

Connect one end of the coaxial cable to the cable outlet on the wall plate.

Connect the other end of the cable to the jack on the back of your TV. If your television has “F” fittings for both antenna and cable, a splitter must be connected to the cable coming from the wall plate. Then connect one of the splitter outputs to the “Antenna” connector on your TV and the other splitter output to the “Cable” connector.

Turn on your TV and follow the instructions in your owner’s manual or on-screen guide for channel set-up.

To receive all of the available channels, you will need to tune for both?cable and antenna. This may require that you run the channel programming twice. The broadcast channels offering some HD are available as if they were coming in on an antenna.
